There will no longer be Android support on Windows 11

Microsoft has announced the end of support for the Windows Subsystem for Android, which allowed users to run Android applications on the operating system.

When Microsoft unveiled Windows 11, they touted the ability to run Android apps as one of its major features. However, it seems that this experiment has failed, as the company has officially announced the discontinuation of support for the Windows Subsystem for Android.

At first glance, the idea seemed practical and promising. With thousands of Android applications available, including popular games, combined with Windows applications, users had access to a vast library of programs. Unfortunately, this will no longer be possible starting today. Why?

Windows 11 will no longer support Android apps

Microsoft’s announcement about the end of support for the Windows Subsystem for Android on Windows 11 came as a surprise to everyone. There were no indications that this feature, which was heavily promoted two years ago, would be removed. There were no issues with it, and users could utilize the applications available in the Amazon Appstore. However, perhaps the lack of access to the Google Play Store, which is widely known, contributed to the function’s lack of popularity? The Amazon store cannot compete in terms of the number of offerings.

Microsoft has not provided reasons for this decision. They simply announced that support for the Windows Subsystem for Android will end on March 5, 2025. However, starting today, users can no longer install applications from the App store or the store itself. If users have already installed these apps, they will continue to work for another year, with technical support available during this time. However, Microsoft warns that there is no guarantee of proper functionality beyond that.

Amazon has also confirmed the end of cooperation in this area and has published an FAQ on its website regarding the use of applications from its store on Windows 11. The two market giants have decided to part ways, leaving users with only the option of using Android apps on smartphones.
